Catherine
Winneberger is a textile conservation and framing
professional. She has many years of experience in
framing both needlework
and art work.
She studied
Music and Art at Kansas University in 1969. In
1979 she went on to study Art Restoration and Color Theory
under Ron Sachs at
the Smithsonian Institution. Her studies included
frame restoration,
frame repair, and gilding (gold leaf).
In 1982,
while raising her young family, Catherine started her
career in framing with a position at the Andrews Air Force
Base's Arts and
Crafts Center. She continued to expand her knowledge
of all aspects of
framing by taking addition courses at the Smithsonian in
textile framing;
textile conservation, cleaning and repair; and textile
stretching and
mounting. In 1994, she opened her own art gallery and
framing business
called Gray Wolf Gallery featuring North American Wildlife
Art and Custom
Framing. In 1995, Catherine
passed the Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA)
exam for
standardized practices. As a Certified Picture Framer,
she became the
Vice President of the tri-state area PPFA and served in this
position until
2002. In 1996, she expanded her business to
include Three Sisters
Needleart - a full-service cross stitch storefront.
She mentored and
trained several of her staff members on the proper
techniques for mounting and
framing needlework.
Catherine
has also exhibited at the Woodlawn Needlework Show where
she demonstrated topics on needlework preservation and
framing. She has
framed cross stitch models for several cross stitch
designers including
StitchInspiration, ..., and most recently Lila's
Studio. She has also
framed artwork for the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico,
Virginia. In 2021,
Catherine taught needlework preparing needlework for lacing
and framing at the
NeedleCraft Corner retreat.
Her love of needlework and
attention to detail show in every piece
of work she touches. She has a strong following of
clients who come back
to her year after year for her expertise. She knows
how to select the
perfect combination of mats, inserts, and the frame to
bring out the beauty in
each piece she frames.
